Advanced
Research on the Net
A
programme on finding, judging and compiling information found on the Internet
(not just ‘how to Google’!)
Riga,
Latvia: May 10th – 11th, 2013
The
Centre for Media Studies at SSE Riga
Welcome
to an intensive two-day seminar on conducting advanced research on the
Internet. All of us believe that we know how to search on the net. We Google.
But there is so much more out there if we use all the available resources and
methods. There are more open sources than one would believe, but there are also
sources that seem to be closed – that actually are not. During these days you
will be shown how to dramatically increase the power of your Internet research.
The
programme is organised by the Centre for Media Studies at the Stockholm School
of Economics in Riga, and has been generously sponsored by the Swedish
“Anne-Marie and Gustaf Ander Foundation”.
Upon
completion of the programme, participants receive certificates issued by the
Centre for Media Studies at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.
Advanced
digital research - methods and sources
Quality
research on the Internet is not easy. Therefore, meet Paul Myers, a specialist
who works regularly with journalistic investigations for the BBC and in some
circles is known as the “web guru”. Myers will show you how to find and use all
the information that is out there in cyber space that most of us have no idea
is available.
Myers
knows the methods for making the most use of the available information for our
journalistic purposes, including how to find the original source of a news
item, and how to map the background and connections of a newsworthy individual.
Paul
Myers - as a research specialist, Myers is involved in training journalists and
providing research consultancy to the broadcast industry in Britain. He has
introduced new tools to the world of journalism and is participating in shaping
an editorial policy for Internet research for the BBC.
